About Us
If you live in the World Golf Village area of St. John’s County, the Villages Athletic Association is for you. We are a community-based organization for those interested in youth sports, whether you have kids who participate or if you would like to be involved in the participation and/or coaching of organized sports.
The purpose of the first wave of VAA meetings will be to discuss the success of the current established leagues in the area, the need for new and established programs, and the formation of a leadership committee to organize and represent these needs. It is our mission that through an organized leadership, we will be able to provide the structure and facilities necessary to fully develop and support youth athletics in the World Golf Village Community area.
Why Have Our Own Association?
Currently, existing sports programs for kids in the World Golf Village area are loosely organized and are either contained entirely within individual developments, or are based on competition between developments. As a result, the developments are in control of most sport leagues, and the leagues interfere with use of facilities by residents. In some cases, a particular sport has no presence at all in our community, and athletes are required to travel to the Julington Creek area to participate in their leagues. VAA intends to work in coordination with these communities to relieve them of the overuse of their facilities, and provide for a structured comprehensive system whereby each athlete and each sport can benefit.
While the Creeks Athletic Association is well organized and provides a good model for the VAA, their fields are at capacity even without the influx of new athletes from the World Golf Village communities. It is our hope that the Villages Athletic Association will be able to operate in parallel with the Creeks and other athletic associations, perhaps providing additional fields and enhanced competition for the betterment of both associations and the schools attended by all student athletes.
The Need for Fields and Facilities
Of primary importance for this initiative are fields on which leagues can play. St. John’s County Parks and Recreation has been doing a fantastic job keeping up with the needs of community sports throughout the county. It is apparent that new fields will need to become part of the future plans for the World Golf Village area as it continues to grow. Currently, a regional park is planned for the area, and now is the time for residents to get involved and provide input for what should be provided. While the current needs seem to be for soccer, lacrosse and baseball fields, it is the position of the VAA that any sport represented by a motivated group of coaches, parents and players will be included and represented.
We Need Your Support!
All interested parties are encouraged to attend our planning meetings on the first Monday of every month, from 7 pm to 8:00 pm. at the Trout Creek Community Center. We are in need of individuals with all types of experience and representation for each sport. It is also our intention to form relationships with the schools attended by our student athletes and encourage school staff members to join us. We will also need people with experience in marketing, law, fund-raising, business and event coordination. All volunteers, regardless of experience will be appreciated and utilized. What is most important is that we get creative individuals who are committed to working together in a positive environment to support youth sports and provide an example of what teamwork can accomplish.
Come support your children and find out what the buzz is about. Please complete our online volunteer form so we can learn more about your anticipated involvement and whether or not you will be able to attend our kickoff event. See you at our next meeting.
